We’ll always remember our wonderful trip to the Galician coast not only because of the magical places we visited but especially because of our insightful guide Diego.

Further on we learned about and continually saw the beautiful rías, inlets with their rich fish life that make the coastline of Galicia so zigzagged. We heard about the reasons for the unique hórreos, stone structures built on columns above ground to protect grain from rats. And we all stood together “at the end of the world” at Fisterra. Even with the fog there – otherwise the day was beautifully sunny – Diego’s vivid description of what we would see with no fog helped us to perceive this mystical place.

We heard about the city of Santiago’s attempt to compete with Bilbao and its Guggenheim by constructing a fantastic City of Culture on the hill above the city with a huge roof landscape that we could see from the bus in the distance and that reflected the map of the city. Diego also revealed the huge financial challenges of such a project.

Our large comfortable bus driven by the very friendly and witty driver Manolo left on time from downtown Santiago and picked up guests from around the world on the way to the Galician coast. From the very beginning of the all-day tour our charming guide Diego told us in perfect English - and of course Spanish - interesting details about what we were passing by and also provided us with fascinating insights into Galician life.

We dropped by a downtown office of this travel agency and booked a tour to Muros, Finesterre, and Muxía with stops also at Puente Maceira and a the Cascada del Ézaro.

Of course we passed by the various caminos that pilgrims follow from all parts of Europe to arrive in Santiago, and of course we heard the story of St. James and the miracles surrounding his final resting place here. But what moved me most was Diego’s explanation for the emotion and the magic of Santiago even for the non-religious. The camino isn’t a path only for Catholics but for all human beings who reflect on the journey from birth to death, on the transience of human life, and who see the setting and reaching of goals as an intrinsically human endeavor. Diego’s summary of the movie The Way put it on our list of must-see movies.
